People Are Speaking Out Against Vaping Restrictions
Restricted Access To Vapor Products Placing Public Health At Risk
The chaos caused by the coronavirus crisis has created an enormous global shift and upended life as we once knew it. As people seek to improve their health to better protect themselves against the pandemic, lawmakers and jurisdictions the world over are shuttering opportunities rather than creating them.
In response to various restrictive regulations, prohibitive policies, and a lack of mobility created by quarantines, people are beginning to push back against these measures. Current and former smokers, as well as public health scholars and harm reduction experts, are coming forward and speaking out against reduced access to vapor products during these trying times.
Anti-vaping activists and opportunistic lawmakers looking to garner favor with the public prior to election continue to push for vapor bans and other policies amid the ongoing pandemic. As a result, many facing nicotine addiction have been left without access to one of the most effective smoking cessation aids available.
The global healthcare system has been pushed to its very limits and is rapidly breaking at the seams. Removing the ability to purchase vapor products as people look to quit or continue abstaining from smoking only exacerbates our current public health crisis.
Vaping offers plenty of promise and potential for those struggling with an addiction to cigarettes and nicotine. Despite the hope that vaping holds, people are being actively prevented access from such a powerful cessation option.
Across the country and all over the world, citizens are beginning to speak out against prohibitive policies targeting public health. People formerly addicted to tobacco or struggling with addiction to nicotine are speaking in favor of all the vaping provides for them and the possibilities it holds for others.
They note the demonstrated risk of harm and additional complications from coronavirus that smokers face, while also pointing out that current evidence indicates vapers are not exposed to such risks. In addition, they note that restricting access to cessation options, especially during times of duress, only increases the likelihood for people to smoke, or even consider deadly black market options.
This falls in line with the consensus of public health experts and harm reduction scholars, who have repeatedly spoken out against the problems with prohibition.
Lawmakers continue in a sustained war against vaping despite the promise it provides and the lack of risk it holds. Yet every year, smoking is responsible for killing and sickening millions of people as the global tobacco epidemic grips the planet.
Estimates from the Centers for Disease Control states that there are an estimated 38 million smokers in just the United States alone. Out of this sizable portion of the population, a staggering 16 million people currently live with some form of smoking-related injury or disease.
Vaping has repeatedly proven itself as one of the greatest tools available to combat this deadly worldwide epidemic. Research from the University of Louisville concluded that vaping is the single most effective smoking cessation option available, even more than prescription alternatives and other nicotine replacement therapies.
Not only is vaping one of the most effective smoking cessation aids available, but current research has demonstrated vaping to be a proven reduced harm alternative to smoking as well. Research from the UK Royal College of Physicians had indicated that vaping is remarkably 95% safer than smoking. This figure has been routinely touted and defended by Public Health England, the country’s top health agency.
Along with all of the benefits and promise that vaping provides the public, current evidence indicates no risk of harm from long-term use too. Research from the National Academy of Sciences found that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking and that there are currently no known long-term health effects from prolonged usage.
In response to this lack of access to vapor products, many former smokers are unfortunately relapsing in their addiction. Even those living in jurisdictions not yet impacted by prohibitive policies are often unable to safely and readily access vapor products due to stay-home and similar quarantine-related orders.
The increase in smoking rates poses an immediate threat to public health, and in turn to healthcare systems throughout the world. Amid an unfolding pandemic, this may push already overburdened hospitals and other health centers to their absolute breaking point.
Members of the vaping industry and community must speak out against prohibitive policies against vaping and speak out in favor of increased access during the pandemic. People deserve access to safe alternatives to tobacco during these trying times, not restrictions, and additional hurdles.
