Scientists Say Smokers are 6 Times More Likely to Quit With Help From Ecigs
There has been a lot of heated controversy this year over whether or not e-cigs are really effective for smoking cessation. This week, the Oxford Journal published a new study that gives a clear look at how ecigs really impact a smoker’s success at kicking the habit. Researchers followed over 1300 American smokers for two years as they tried electronic cigarettes to find out if it would have any impact on their ability to successfully stop using tobacco. At the end of the study, scientists concluded that smokers that use ecigs regularly are six times more likely to quit smoking.
Among the smokers involved in the study, some of them used ecigs regularly while others only used them intermittently. Critics have often claimed that dual use, or smoking and vaping simultaneously, will only increase tobacco use in the long run. However, scientists found that to be false. In fact, the more the smokers vaped, the more likely they were to successfully quit using tobacco. Those that only used ecigs occasionally were much less likely to kick the cigarette habit.
The study also brought forward a massive problem in our society in regards to how ecigs are portrayed by media and anti-smoking advocates. After interviewing those smokers that abandoned ecigs or only used them sparsely, scientists found many of them walked away from vaping because they were scared that ecigs would be bad for their health. It’s the ultimate irony that fear over the health consequences of ecigs drove people straight into continued tobacco use. In reality, vaping is the lesser of two evils and most researchers believe that vaping isn’t harmful at all. But the media loves to push out reports that get a response and so fear mongering abounds.
Such negative reporting on e-cigs is dangerous because it is ultimately preventing smokers from experiencing the enormous benefits that vaping can provide. As this new study proves, ecigs can be the perfect transitional aid to help a smoker quit, but if people are too afraid to try vaping, then how will they manage to kick the habit when other nicotine replacement therapies have failed?
The bottom line is that the electronic cigarette ban be an incredible tool to help many smokers escape tobacco addiction. If we don’t stop sending out messages of fear, we are doing a disservice to public health and ultimately only furthering the problems that tobacco can cause. In this case, we must carefully weigh the risks and the benefits. It’s clear that when it comes right down to it, the benefits of a smoker switching to tobacco-free electronic cigarettes far outweigh any potential unknown risks.
