How The Senate Majority Leader’s “Guarantee” Could Change The CBD Industry Forever
Mitch McConnell recently told reporters that if a Farm Bill is passed then hemp would absolutely be included in it
Over the last several years, CBD oil has been gaining a ton of traction as a treatment for several debilitating conditions. In fact, many doctors now prescribe CBD to their patients instead of draining, lab-made chemicals. Unfortunately, the legal status of CBD has often been in question, as it’s derived from the federally illegal marijuana or hemp plants. But what many people don’t realize is that CBD doesn’t get you high at all, and in fact many manufacturers only use 100% THC free hemp plants to cultivate their CBD products.
As a result, hemp plants, regardless of THC content, have been illegal in most parts of America for over 80 years. This has seriously hampered the expansion of the CBD industry, as farmers have had trouble getting the same help that the government offers others under the Farm Bill. But according to the Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R- Kentucky), that issue will soon be a problem of the past. He recently told reporters that if there is a Farm Bill of any kind, he “guarantees” hemp will be included in it.
The fight to get hemp plants included on the Farm Bill is something that McConnell has been working on personally for many years now. Hailing from Kentucky, he has a personal stake in the inclusion of hemp, as Kentucky was formally the nation’s leading producer of hemp before the infamous “Marihuana Tax Act” made it mostly illegal in 1937. As such, it’s no wonder he’s leading the charge to get the wheels turning on this once massive industry. A vote on the 2018 Farm Bill was had been scheduled for September 30th but was postponed when a pre-election impasse was reached.
He addressed reporters during a stop at one of the several hemp farms he recently visited. “It’s interesting, I do think it has a lot of potential. And as all of you already know, in terms of food and medicine but also car parts… it’s an extraordinary plant.” If passed McConnell says that the regulations on the hemp producers will be very light and not involve the Department of Justice at all. The 2018 Farm Bill vote will be one of the first things on the docket once Congress gets back in session. So even though nothing is set in stone, many experts, along with McConnell, expect it to pass.
The Benefits Of CBD
Alternative medicine communities have been raving about the many benefits of CBD oil since at least the 1980s, but the use has really exploded over the last few years. One of the most commonly referenced benefits of CBD is also one of the most well researched, and ultimately life-changing. Starting on a regimen of CBD has been shown to significantly reduce the number and severity of seizures experienced by epilepsy patients. What’s better is that since CBD doesn’t get you high, it’s proven massively successful for treating childhood epilepsy.
Another group of people who could significantly improve their quality of life with CBD is those dealing with chronic pain, anxiety, or even depression. Some doctors are even starting to wonder what CBD could mean for the ongoing fight against the opioid epidemic. They’re especially attractive options since they’re entirely non-habit forming, unlike the heavy drugs commonly used to treat pain and anxiety.
If hemp plants are added to the 2018 Farm Bill, it would be a massive step forward for the legitimization of the CBD industry. It would signal to outsiders that hemp, and by extension CBD, has significant uses and benefits that ought to be leveraged instead of ignored. It’ll allow hemp farmers to utilize the same protections and subsidies that most other farmers rely on. But more importantly than any of that, it would open the door for the quality of life to be massively improved for millions of people dealing with severe conditions. Whether it’s treating epilepsy or chronic pain, it offers another option the vast majority didn’t know about until recently. That may very well end up being the most critical thing that CBD oil has to offer.
Have you ever tried taking CBD oil, if so what was your experience? How can we help legitimize the CBD industry to outsiders?
