Aspire AVP VS. SMOK NOVO; Which Refillable Pod System Is Better?

Refillable pod systems like the Aspire AVP are becoming increasingly popular, but how do you know you’re buying the right one?

Pod style vaporizers have become increasingly popular over the years as vapers look for a super simple and easy way to get their nicotine fix. At first, most pod systems exclusively used pre-filled pods with a set number of flavor options. But the new refillable pod systems, which allow users to vape any of their favorite e-liquids on the go, have quickly become one of the new big things in portable vaping. As such, it’s no surprise there are so many options out there, and seemingly more every day.

SMOK has found quite a bit of success with one of their refillable pod offerings, the NOVO. But one device recently released which is aiming to take that crown is the AVP by Aspire. Both of these brands have well-deserved reputations for providing consistently incredible vaping experiences. But which of these refillable pod vapes is best? We’ll breakdown the similarities and differences, as well as provide our list of pros and cons to help decide which vaporizer ultimately comes out on top.

What’s In The Box

It’s no coincidence these two vapes are compared so often. For starters they’re basically the same size, measuring in at 88 x 24 x 14 for the NOVO and 82 x 39 x 14 for the AVP. So other than the NOVO being slightly longer and the AVP wider at its widest point, they’re the same in terms of portability. That said, the more powerful and efficient battery of the AVP packed into virtually the same sized package is a clear advantage for the AVP.

Both packages contain more or less the same supplies. The NOVO comes with one NOVO battery and two refillable pods, as well as a very short USB charging cable. The AVP also comes with the one battery, two refillable pods, and charging cable, but it also comes with a handy lanyard which I actually found quite useful. I especially loved how the AVP was easily detachable from the lanyard, making it a lot more viable to use. It’s also worth mentioning the AVP comes with a warranty card, while the NOVO does not.

Both vapes are exceptionally well crafted and beautiful devices. The NOVO features cobra plated panels in one of eight vibrant colors. The AVP is made from high-quality Zinc-Aluminium Alloy, and it feels super durable in your hands. It comes in five beautiful colors, including teal, purple, and rainbow. Given that most brands only provide a single pod, it’s a massive bonus that both of these devices come standard with two 2ml refillable pods.

My Experiences

The SMOK NOVO was one of the first in this new generation of high-quality refillable pod systems. It’s powered by an internal 400 mAh battery, although they’re marketed as being 450 mAh for some reason. This provides the NOVO with an output range between 10-16W. It’s a draw-fired device, but only has two different modes, a mouth-to-lung, and direct lung mode. That leads to one of the most significant advantages of the NOVO over other refillable pod systems. While the mouth-to-lung is adequate, the direct lung mode is one of the best I’ve ever used in this style device. However, other than the pros mentioned above, such as the two provided pods and exceptional colorways, this is where the NOVO starts to pale in comparison to the AVP.

For instance, the NOVO requires using a rubber stopper to fill the pod, while the AVP employs a much more clever design without any of these moving parts which are liable to break. I also noticed e-liquid tended to pool at the bottom of the connectors with the NOVO, while I never had any leakage problems with the AVP. Another annoying little issue was not being able to tell the e-liquid level remaining once the pod is in the NOVO. While most of these issues are not deal breakers, they are issues that simply don’t exist with the Aspire AVP.

The AVP is an exceptional little device. It’s powered by an internal 700 mAh battery which provides output between 8-12W. It comes with three power settings, which can be switched via the single button design. One thing that sets the AVP far above the NOVO is the regulated output. This means no matter how charged your battery is, your experience will stay consistent. With the variable output of the NOVO, you only get your best hits when the device is fully charged, with power rapidly decreasing as the battery depletes. This makes it a fantastic choice for smokers looking to make the switch to vaping. The device is actually draw fired, so the only time you need to use the button is to unlock the vape or change the mode. It has an incredible amount of airflow, especially for a pod-based device. The battery life was exceptional, as I only needed to charge once a day, even with heavy use. One minor downside to the extended battery life is the relative lack of power. That said, the small difference in wattage between the AVP and NOVO is nothing compared to the convenience of extended battery life, in my opinion.

Conclusion

Pod-based systems are becoming increasingly popular as the technology for combining refillable pods with high-quality vapor is getting more accessible all the time. Both the Aspire AVP and the SMOK NOVO are high-quality refillable pod systems with plenty to offer. That said, the AVP benefits from timing, as they’ve been able to more or less deal with all the most glaring problems with other devices like the NOVO. Between the easy to use design and relatively exceptional vapor quality, the Aspire AVP is a perfect choice for any beginners looking to break into vaping or established vapers who want the ideal vape to take with them on the go. This brand new refillable pod-based system is currently available online for $34.95 MSRP, but most retailers are offering discounts, making an incredible deal that much better.
